A surge of happiness was felt by Teacher Imelda Tadeo, Principal of Sapang Uwak Elementary School in Pampanga, as her students carry boxes of toys to the new Toy Library room. Teacher Imelda cannot help but be grateful for the toys and books that came. She says, “Naku, maraming salamat po talaga sa mga laruan at libro. Lalo na po ‘yung mga libro. Kailangang-kailangan talaga po ‘yan ng mga estudyante rito.” (Really, thank you very much for the toys and books. Especially the books. The students here really need them.)
Having the Toy Library area in Sapang Uwak, located in the mountains near Mt. Pinatubo, was more than just a complement to the existing education program that the school provides. Teacher Imelda admitted that most of the students have difficulty in reading, and the Toy Library could be a tool to fill in the gap: “Marami pong bata dito na grade three na pero hirap pa rin magbasa. Sana makatulong itong PTL para maengganyo silang matutong magbasa”. (There are grade three students here who still find it difficult to read. I hope the PTL could help so the children will be encouraged to read.)
The happiness felt by Teacher Imelda was also seen in the eyes of the Aeta students as toys and books surround them. Overwhelmed, the kids did not even know at first what toys or books to pick up. And when they made their pick, each one of them had a huge smile on their faces and a glint of genuine happiness in their eyes. Seeing the kids play with the toys and read the books was already an affirmation to Teacher Imelda.
Philippine Toy Library
From a Facebook status, a national advocacy was born. The Philippine Toy Library (PTL) is made up of volunteer-friends who hope to provide the experience of play to our Filipino children, especially those who live in cramped and congested areas. Idle spaces in barangays, schools or parishes are turned into fun and educational PTL areas to keep kids off the streets. Currently, PTL has 39 sites and more are being put up, to bring joy to the next generation of Filipinos.
